One of the pre-appointment instructions I ask my clients to follow is to avoid tinting their brows before their cosmetic tattoo appointment. It’s a request that often surprises people because eyebrow tint only colours the brow hairs, so it’s easy to assume it won’t have any influence on the tattoo itself. 

The truth is that tinting doesn’t affect how your cosmetic tattoo heals or how the pigment is implanted into the skin. The reason I ask clients to avoid tinting is because one of the most important decisions I make during your appointment is selecting a pigment that complements your natural brow hair, not a temporary tint. 

One of the biggest misconceptions about cosmetic tattooing is that the pigment should be matched to the colour of freshly tinted brows. In reality, I’m colour matching to your natural brow hair, your skin tone and your undertones. These are all permanent features that remain long after a brow tint has faded. 

A brow tint usually lasts anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month, whereas your cosmetic tattoo is designed to soften beautifully over many months and years. I want to see your brows exactly as they are naturally, so I can choose a pigment that will continue to complement your face long after the tint has disappeared. 

If I were to choose a pigment that matched the darker, freshly tinted brow hairs, it may look perfect on the day of your appointment, however, once the tint gradually fades over the following few weeks, your natural brow hairs will return to their original colour while the tattoo will remain the same. This can create more contrast between the tattoo and your natural brow hairs than I want to see. In natural daylight or under bright lighting, you may notice your lighter brow hairs sitting over a darker tattoo, making the tattoo appear more obvious rather than blending seamlessly with your existing brows. 

One question I hear quite often is whether matching to your natural brow means your cosmetic tattoo will look too light. 

The answer is no. 

Once your cosmetic tattoo has fully healed, you can absolutely continue tinting your brows if you enjoy the look of freshly tinted brows. In fact, many of my clients do exactly that. The tint darkens the natural brow hairs while the cosmetic tattoo provides soft shape and fullness underneath. 

Because the tinted hairs sit over the healed tattoo, the overall brow appears darker and more defined than the tattoo alone. This means there is no need to permanently tattoo your brows as dark as a fresh tint, because you can always achieve that additional depth by tinting your natural brow hairs whenever you choose.  

This approach also gives you flexibility. On days when your tint has faded, your cosmetic tattoo still provides a soft, natural-looking brow. When you decide to tint your brows again, you’ll simply achieve a darker, more defined version without needing darker tattoo pigment underneath.

By colour matching to your natural brow rather than a temporary tint, the tattoo is able to blend more harmoniously with your own hairs as they grow and move, creating a softer and more believable healed result.
