HOW SUN EXPOSURE CAN MAKE YOUR COSMETIC TATTOO FADE FASTER

August 14, 2026

One of the most common misconceptions clients have about cosmetic tattooing is that fading happens at a steady, predictable rate when in reality, a summer of sun exposure can speed that process up considerably.

Cosmetic tattooing (including microblading, nano brows, lip blush, and similar techniques) uses pigment that is intentionally implanted into the very superficial layers of the skin. Unlike traditional tattooing, cosmetic tattooing is placed at a shallower depth so the result can soften and fade naturally over time. Once healed, the pigment is still affected by the skin’s natural processes, including exposure to UV radiation, the invisible light from the sun that can contribute to the breakdown and fading of pigment over time.

Rather than fading evenly, sun-exposed cosmetic tattooing can sometimes fade more quickly or unevenly. You may notice areas becoming lighter at different rates, the fronts appearing softer, or the overall brow looking slightly more patchy or less defined. Over time, this can also contribute to subtle changes in tone as different pigment components fade at different rates.

This is completely normal, though it’s rarely explained clearly, which is why so many clients are caught off guard by it.

I always advise clients to apply SPF directly over their healed cosmetic tattooing any time they’re in direct sun, in the same way they would protect any other area of skin from UV exposure. It’s one of the simplest ways to preserve both the colour and the shape of your result for longer.

Please keep in mind that even after full healing, cosmetic tattooing is never permanent in the way traditional tattooing is. Pigment is intentionally implanted at a shallower depth so it can be adjusted, refined, and fade naturally over time. That same superficial placement is part of what allows the result to soften, but it also means the pigment can be more responsive to factors such as sun exposure.

It’s about finding the right balance between longevity and allowing the brows to soften naturally over time, so they can be adjusted and refined as they fade rather than assuming that once brows are healed, they need no further thought.

Because protecting your investment doesn’t end when you leave the studio chair. A little SPF can help keep your brows looking soft, natural, and true to their original colour for as long as possible.
